Jennifer's Body screened in Toronto and scanning through the reviews today reminds me of that tennis match scene in Strangers on a Train where Hitch zooms in on the audience watching Guy play and their heads are going back and forth, back and forth, watching the game, side to side, but in the middle is Bruno, Guy's obsessive new "friend," and his head isn't turning at all, it's just focused on Guy. In this situation here, the reviews are the ones bouncing back and forth between hate and love, and I'm the perv staring straight ahead intent on seeing the film no matter what.

Anyway! A sample of what I mean. Via DH comes this rave opinion on Jennifer's Body:

"The director of "Girlfight" has bounced back with a film that takes the horror genre to a whole new wonderful level.

In a performance that can only be described as spectacular, Megan Fox proves how much more of an actress she is...

"Jennifer’s Body" could easily have turned into a film that borders on adolescent stupidity, but with a script by Diablo Cody that bristles with wit and sharp characters, and director Kusama at the helm, the result is a fresh, wonderfully audacious, incredibly sexy and quite brilliantly funny film that succeeds on more levels than meets the eye. Cody completely subverts a common genre and gives it a distinctly female perspective that drives the narrative throughout while Kusama gives the film her own original point of view, resulting in a work that is both visually imaginative as well as smart and funny.

... Both women are extraordinary in this film, and Seyfried is an actress whose talent leaps off the screen in one of the most exquisite performances by a young actress seen this year."

Jinkies! That rave even made me a little suspicious. But it is what I want from the movie all the same. But then at the other end of the tennis-court there's this pan at Cinematical:

"What is Jennifer's Body, and what is it supposed to be about? I don't know, and the film doesn't seem to, either: It's not really a horror movie, because those are usually scary. Nor is it smart or self-aware enough to be a treatise on teenage girls or male fears of female sexuality. And it's not even a swing-for-the-fences, spectacular enough failure to be a death knell or even deconstruction of the severely limited appeal of either its star, Megan Fox, or its screenwriter, Diablo Cody. Jennifer's Body substitutes hipster credibility for emotional currency, confuses pop-psychology insight with substantive social commentary, and measures terror on a scale that ranges from the word boo to a dead spider; in short, Jennifer's Body just does not work."

I have less faith that I'll agree with this review than I will the rave though because the reviewer spends a good hunk of time bitching about how much he hated Juno, and I am just not on that wavelength.

I guess I'll just have to see for myself then! What a rip-off. I was hoping the consensus would form and make my opinion for me here! Ugh, now I have to think and shit. Bummer!
