They Found Their Wallace

It's been awhile since I've heard anything on Edgar Wright's film adaptation of the delightful comic Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World... Michael Cera had been cast a titular boyfriend-beater Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead as the gal he's fighting for... but who would play Scott's roommate Wallace who happens to be a big ol' homosexual? Drum-roll please:

"HitFix has confirmed that Kieran Culkin has been cast as Wallace Wells in Edgar Wright's "Scott Pilgrim vs. the World."

Based on Bryan Lee O'Malley's popular series of "Scott Pilgrim" graphic novels, the new movie finds the title character (played by Michael Cera) having to defeat his girlfriend's seven evil ex-boyfriends in order to win her heart. In the books, Wells is Pilgrim's gay roommate (they share a bed even though Pilgrim is heterosexual). Unlike Pilgrim though, Wells is considered the more responsible of the duo and also know for his pithy observations."

(via, via) Scott and Wallace's interactions are some of my favorite stuff in the series - it's similar to Cera's relationships with his queer band-mates in Nick & Norah actually but even closer - like the quote above says, the straight Scott and gay Wallace share a bed. And Wallace is no eunuch - the boy gets laid too. We don't much see relationships like this in mainstream pop culture between two fellas, so I love it. Bring it on.

Also, Kieran Culkin is terrifically underrated and I'm psyched he got the part. Whoop!
