The Greatest Movie...

... in which a hippie named Alan and a corpse named Orville
get gay-married only to have their wedding night bliss
interrupted by, well, Orville's ascendancy
to brain-chomping zombie-dom?

I'd been pushing aside my copy of this flick for so long now to watch other things that I'd since forgotten that it was directed by Bob Clark, the man who brought the world the classic 1974 slasher Black Christmas (not to mention A Christmas Story). If I'd remembered that when I watched it then I might not have been so surprised when it turned out to not be nearly as horrible as I'd been expecting it to be.

Besides the fact that it's got what is possibly my favorite movie title of all-time (It probably dukes it out with Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill! for that honor), it's an off-kilter and atmospheric flick with some top-grade visuals buried inside some extraordinarily looooow-budget trappings. The acting is pretty terrible throughout (save one character, the delightfully deranged Anya). And man... those are some bad costumes. Color-coordinated hippie things. So many clashing striped bell-bottoms. Like... straight out of Scooby Doo. The whole thing actually felt like a live-action Scooby Doo episode. With a little gore. And a little implied homosexual necrophilia. So... just like Scooby Doo, really.

Not as good as Black Christmas or Deathdream, but a solid #3 on my list of favorite Bob Clark movies. I'm still sad that he's gone (and will never be able to redeem himself for the Baby Geniuses movies).

Saw this a billion years ago ... doesn't one of the women try to raise the dead by doing a stereotypical Jewish mother shtick at one point? For some reason I recall a scene like that.

Of course the very last scene with Orville on the bed is wonderfully chilling.
