5 Off The Top Of My Head - Depp Day

.

Johnny Depp turns 45 today. You'd think he'd be a John by now, wouldn't you? Johnny's the little kid running to the five-and-dime on his bicycle and counting pennies on the counter for a new pack of baseball cards and maybe a Baby Ruth, not the 45 year old father smoking unfiltered cigarettes in France. I suppose John Depp doesn't have that same special ring to it though. Anyway, a happy one to J-Depp. And since it's become a schtick as of late, here are my five favorite performances of his, so far, and in no specific order:

Edward Scissorhands, Edward Scissorhands
"And then she showed me the back room
where she took all of her clothes off."

Edward D. Wood, Jr, Ed Wood
"I'm all man. I even fought in W.W.2.
Of course, I was wearing women's undergarments
under my uniform."

Gilbert Grape, What's Eating Gilbert Grape?
"We don't really move, we'd like to but...
my mom is sort of attached to the house."

Captain Jack Sparrow,
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl
"A wedding? I love weddings. Drinks all around!"

Ichabod Crane, Sleepy Hollow
"You must never move the body!"
With a special mention to his work as Glen Lantz in the original Nightmare on Elm Street, of course.

Ahh half-shirts. They never go out of style.* So go on, hit the comments and tell me what a fool I am to love his performance in Sleepy Hollow so much (I do; I adore it) or why Leo outshone him in Gilbert Grape, or whatever - Hit me with your best shot! I'm ready!

* Because they weren't ever in style, and never will be. Unless it's a 20 year old Johnny Depp wearing them I guess.

Well, not to disappoint, but I actually loved JD in Sleepy Hollow. He's at his best when he plays the over-educated book smart guy who winds up over his head when confronted with the real world.

My vote for best JD performance would be from The Ninth Gate. Love him in nerdy glasses!

No "Dead Man", I'm disappointed.

I've never seen Dead Man, Ronald. In fact, there are a bunch of Depp's less mainstream movies that I never got around to catching (he's never been someone I went out of my way to seek out, really; same with Jarmusch). But comments are made for telling me what's worth catching now! ;-)

Happy B-Day to JD! I love all these movies (and all the rest he's done - have only missed The Brave, Arizona Dream, and some of the documentaries and foreign film cameos). Leo was great in Gilbert Grape and Martin Landau was great in Ed Wood, but I don't think either outshone Johnny. And as for calling him "Johnny": no one ever had a problem calling Johnny Carson "Johnny" even when he was in his 60s, and the same goes for "Jimmy" Stewart. I don't see what the problem is here. JD's dad is known as "John", and that's how they've always differentiated the two.

i was just thinking about Jdepp after watching the MTV movie awards... he just never gets less hot or less cool. Oh, to be drinking a bottle of wine and smoking unfiltered cigarettes with him in the countryside of france!
