5 Off The Top Of My Head - Yay California!

.

In honor of the California Supreme Court's decision to overturn the ban on same-sex marriage today, here are the first five movies that came to mind when I tried to think of movies that capture California:

L.A. Story (1991)

Boogie Nights (1997)

Vertigo (1958)

Short Cuts (1993)

Point Break (1991)

Blame that last one on all this sequel news as of late; Point Break is not a movie that'd normally pop into my head this easily... (I say as I stash my Bohdi doll under some old newspapers)

I've only been to California twice - the first time for ComiCon in San Diego several years ago and the second for my road trip up the coast last Summer (which inspired this Vertigo-themed post) - so I'm hardly an expert on the state, and I'm sure there are better examples that really capture what CA's all about. Hell, this entire list and fifty more could've been on movies about the movie business (what's that you're saying? There's an air of narcissism in Hollywood? No!). But these were simply the first five movies that flashed through my head when I told myself to think of California movies. What are yours?

Having been stuck in L.A. traffic plenty of times, I'm going to have to go with Falling Down.

It's important to capture all of CA, not just LA (says a proud Sacramento native) so here are my selections:

The Big Lebowski (LA)
Sideways (The Napa Valley)
Zodiac (San Francisco)
Boogie Nights(San Fernando Valley)
The Broken Hearts Club (West Hollywood)

Though I freely admit the last selction is far less admirable as cinema than the previous four. Other notable mentions:

LA Confidential (LA is the best city for noir!)
The Player
Basic Instict
Sunset Boulevard
