... that Sigourney Weaver is doing a voice for Pixar's big Summer release Wall*E? I did not. Via SciFi Wire:
That's a warranted geek-out if ever there was one.
I'm still waiting to hear back from Siggy on whether she'll do my answering machine message. It's a toss-up between "Get away from her you bitch; just leave a message after the beep," and her singing George Costanza's version of the Greatest American Hero theme song. I figure if she'd do that commercial for Direct TV in character as Ripley she might sign on for this. All I have to pay her with is a weekend of laying around my apartment watching all four Alien movies, both Ghostbusters, Working Girl, The Ice Storm, and Galaxy Quest, but I think she might bite. What better way could she possibly find to spend her time? Call me, Siggy!
Seriously, what hearing Weaver's voice is going to do is give me Planet Earth flashbacks. How lovely was her narration? I remember saying while watching that Discovery Channel series I
could just sit and listen to her voice forever. And hey, it's Earth Day and I brought up a Discovery Channel series! I'm ga-ga for Earth Day! Go green! Whittle Al Gore's dusty bones into useful things such as firewood and food containers! And stuff. The end. (wow this post descended into madness)

"Weaver will voice the computer of the starship Axiom. "We kind of geeked out at the thought of having a little wink to Alien," Morris said in a panel. "Instead of fighting Mother, Sigourney has become Mother.""

And she's in Baby Mama!
Indeed she is! It's a Siggy-renaissance!
My favorite Sigourney Weaver film is "Death and the Maiden."
One of Roman Polanski's best films (which is saying something), one of Ben Kingsley's best performances (which is saying something, and one of Sigourney Weaver's ballsiest characters (which is....
It's been maybe 10-12 years since I last saw DatM. I really have to revisit it, I don't remember much about it at all.
It's based on a stage play, which makes sense considering it only has 3 characters in it for 95% of the running time. It's essentially a battle of wits between Kingsley and Weaver, and has the same sort of claustrophobic power as "12 Angry Men" only with a war-crime-rape being the impetus rather than a knifing.
I suppose "Hard Candy" would be like the impotent MTV version of the same scenario.
Here's the awesome poster:

I'm glad she's doing this, but I also wish she'd turn down all of the smaller cameos, supporting roles and voice work so she could be in a major film role again. That'd be swell, but maybe she's not getting any offers? I dunno... Love her, though.
I sold books to her twice when I worked at Borders. She was super duper nice and sooooo tall and pretty and I couldn't muster up the cajones to say anything to her about, like, stuff because...well, what do you say without simply falling at her feet??
The clip they showed at the panel was amazing and Ms Weaver conveyed that whole 'I'm an automated voice... except for you savvy viewer who gets the inside-joke' very well.
Can't wait for this movie.
Hmmm...I found her narration of Planet Earth too cutesy, and it was scripted that way when compared to Attenborough's.
In any event, she was pretty hilarious as the Planet Express Ship in Futurama so this should be good.
