What The Monkey?

.

A pox on my own house for my forgetfulness in reveling post-wise in the fact that The Golden Compass arrived in theaters this weekend. So here's our chance! Have you seen it yet? What did you think? Tell me in the comments!

Oh, Ja, graduate school and work are kicking my gay ass. I just don't have the time to go to the movies. I guess, for the time being, I'll just have to live vicariously through you.

Eh? Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. My partner really enjoyed it--he read the books, I haven't. I felt it either needed to be edited shorter and split into two longer films. The CG was pretty good.

It's a tough call. One one hand the acting was quite good and the cgi excellent. On the other, the story was just ok; it was a little rushed and some parts of it felt underexplained. I was quite surprised that both Craig and Kidman were not in the film all that much. However, if Hollywood makes The Subtle Knife, I'll go see it.

It was... rushed, and the acing was poor and the names were wrong.. it was okay... I hated the ending though, as most people did. Sam Elliot was the best!

Good not excellent. Like some of the Harry Potter films it felt like a bit too much of a rushed highlights package.

This said, I felt performances all round were excellent, the world was beautifully realised and the 2 battle sequences were great.

Would have prefered the book's ending though...

I might write up something more official-like, but I'm pretty much right where y'all are. I'm seeing it again this week so I might wait to write up a real post til then. But yeah... it was rushed, and didn't have the character development it needed. The ending didn't bother me just because I knew where they ere ending it beforehand; if I hadn't been prepared it probably would've. I thought Dakota was terrific, and I thought the world was nicely realized, from a visual standpoint. It just needed more there there, and it needed more commitment by the studio to realize this world as Pullman did and not water it down so badly. It did make me want to re-read the books, though, and it also kept me hopeful that we see the other two books filmed. Though... who knows, with just 26 million.
