Today's Mood

.

Billy Brennan (Alessandro Nivola),
Jurassic Park III

"I rescued your hat."

Thus ends my "Written by Alexander Payne" Week of Today's Mood's... yes, Alexander Payne wrote Jurassic Park III, or at least (much like I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry) got a writing credit for the film; who knows how much he actually had to do with the finished product. Judging by the above quote being the best line Alessandro Nivola had in the entire film, hopefully not too much, Mr. Payne.

I stumbled upon the following interview with Nivola in 2002 when asked about the possibility of a fourth Jurassic film (he apparently had to sign on for a 4th when he did the 3rd) and what his experience was like making the 3rd (via IGN):

"So, what do you think? Are they going to go ahead with Jurassic Park IV?"

"You know, I tell you what," says Nivola, "I really hope not. I really hope not."

He adds, "I found that to be a..." (after a big exhale) "a really trying experience."

"Any particular reason?"

"Because it was..." Nivola gathers his thoughts. "It was like the only part I've ever done that just had nothing for me to latch on to, character-wise. And it was just," again, he exhales, and this time leans forward to where he puts his forehead almost on the table. He looks up, "It was kind of maddening."

"I have to say, Sam Neill got me through it," adds Nivola. "He got me through it because he played ukulele, and we could sit around in our trailers and strum Beach Boys songs." Laughing, he concludes, "And if it hadn't been for that, I would have gone out of my mind."

What I liked about JIII (one of the few things, dinos and Nivola's tight T-Shirt excepted of course) was the weirdly out-of-place gay vibes Neill and Nivola shaded their student-teacher relationship with - watch it again, if you dare, and see the starry-eyed glares these two feast upon each other with, it's really amusing.

I'd watch JP3 5000 times before watching The Lost World one more time. Ugh.

...well, except the gymnastic scene. That bit was a riot.

(also, I love your new banner. Easily the best bit in the movie!)

I cannot stand every second of Tea Leoni's presence in JP3, she grates on my nerves soooo intensely. Otherwise I might be able to give it more of a chance.

The Lost World is a mess but it's got some really fine scenes - the bit with the trailer hanging off the cliff is really nail-biting and intense, and I love the hunt scenes at the start, with the motorcycles swerving between dino legs.

Tea Leoni is quite ridiculous, true, but at least JP3 doesn't turn into freakin' Godzilla at the end, nor is it's main character Jeff freakin' Goldblum so I much prefer it to The Lost World. Put the gymnastic scene and the cliff scene in JP3 and it'd be actually really great. Oh, and take away that silly "all it wants is it's eggs!" ending. That was silly. Silly silly silly. But, better than Godzilla, natch.

You could name almost any movie ever made and "It was better than Godzilla" would be a given.

Oh and Glenn, of course you like the new banner, you're just happy to not have to see Pennywise the clown every time you open the page now! ;-)
