Happy Birthday, Paul Verhoeven!

It's also director Paul Verhoeven's birthday today - and he's turning an appropriately skeevy 69 years old! How could we not honor the man who made Total Recall then Basic Instinct then Showgirls then Starship Troopers? Trash, yes; but genius too. Not to mention Robocop and The 4th Man. And his most recent film, Black Book, is in all seriousness a really fine film (and also, yes, totally trashy as well), and this man is responsible for having brought so much entertainment to my life, I thought I'd do him a favor so I called up Casper Van Dien (he's not too hard to get ahold of these days) and had him re-enact a memorable scene from Starship Troopers - sixty-nine lashes of the whip for every year we've had Pauly-boy around! Oh how Paul loved it. Alas, I'm keeping those pictures for myself, but here's the gist:

Happy birthday, Paul! Keep on truckin' you certifiable madman.

Yeah, I will forever be grateful to him for directing Starship Troopers. It's a mediocre film, and some may call it bad. But I love the fact that it was set in Buenos Aires. That was just so random. Who thought of that? Loved it! Oh, and Casper Van Dien (Johnny Rico) was a joy to watch. So hot!!!!!

I love "embiggen." I hope I'm not infringing on copyright when I steal it for personal use.

The movie, IMO, was so-so, but I'll have to agree with Marius, in that setting it in Buenos Aires was a stroke of genius. Definitely adds that touch of future otherworldliness (as if the big ass bugs weren't enough) to the film. And of course Casper was just beautiful...
