When It Pours...

..
So our long movie drought has officially been stormed upon as of this weekend. There are five movies coming out this week (keep in mind these are NYC release dates), along with one hold-over from last weekend, that I am absolutely going to have to see. A run-down of what I speak of, you ask? Whatever you say, I reply!

Last Week's Hold-Over -

The Science of Sleep

I was away last weekend so I haven't had the opportunity to see Michel Gondry's latest yet. The middling reviews are not enough to keep me away from a movie made by the man who made Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - I will follow him to the ends of the Earth, with or without Charlie Kaufman. Plus, yes, the trailer made me cry.

Opens Today -

Shortbus

Even though I've admitted to not being much of a Hedwig fan, I do find myself curious about John Cameron Mitchell's latest, more than I expected to be actually. And no, not in a pervy way. It's got a terrific trailer, and as long as JCM keeps his pants zipped up I'm there... he does, doesn't he? Yikes. Anyway, the boyfriend loved Hedwig and wants to see this even more than I, so I don't have a choice anyway.

Good grief! I'm already exhausted just looking at that list. Well, the only definite thing so far that I will be seeing before the weekend ends is Little Children, I've been hard for that one since seeing the trailer. I've just recently remembered how completely enamored I am with Kate Winslet - seriously, I don't know why I'd never really formed it into words that she is, far and away, my favorite actress alive. But while reading the cover story of this week's EW it struck me that she is, I love her sooooo very much it pains me and, consequently, completely creeps out my boyfriend.

Tideland I do really want to see as well; when Terry Gilliam's on he really does it for me, and some are saying he's on once more with this one. Then... some are saying otherwise. Can't decide!

I'm flipping back and forth with TCM:TB, as well; I liked the first remake from a couple years ago okay, but word is this new one is even better. And the trailer's effectively creepy. And more R. Lee Ermey is certainly a good thing. So this'll probably sneak into my schedule some night.

The Departed... this is the one I'm least sold on. Scorsese has really put me off with his last couple of films - I loved the look of The Aviator and Cate Blanchett, of course, but otherwise... no. And I disliked Gangs of New York pretty strongly. Really the only thing drawing me towards this is some sense of duty towards the man who made Taxi Driver, and the fact that the trailer for the David Fincher-Jake Gyllenhaal film Zodiac, that is the air I breathe, is showing before it. But seeing as how the trailer will indubitably be online soon enough... well, we'll see.

And this isn't even taking into account the fact that I've suddenly decided I should probably go and see The Queen, as well as the sudden reemergence of television-related time-swallowing! Oh god I am doomed.
