300... Good? Good!

...

AICN has got the first word (careful - there are spoilers there) from a test screening of 300, Zack Snyder's adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel that tells the story of "the 480 B.C. Battle of Thermopylae, where the King of Sparta led his army against the advancing Persians; the battle is said to have inspired all of Greece to band together against the Persians, and helped usher in the world's first democracy", and word is very, very good.

I guess word from ComiCon, where they saw a tiny bit of footage, was awesome as well. Consider me officially excited.

I haven't read the book but Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead was far better than it had any right to be (seriously, the first 15-20 minutes makes up one of the greatest horror sequences in the past ten years... plus Sarah Polley!)

Also, we all know how easily I'm swayed by promises of beefcake (BEEFCAKE!), and 300, from what I've seen, appears to be positively rolling in it.

Oh, and that Frank Miller guy's done some good stuff, too.

But what this early-positive-word really gets me excited for? Snyder's next job is (hopefully, if it all falls into place this time) an adaptation of Watchmen, the genre-defying bright shining masterpiece atop the hill of Greatest Examples of Their Art-form Ever. Watchmen is to "superhero comics" as The Godfather is to "mobster movies." Good word here means less skepticism and /or cynicism there. Yay positivity!

I only learnt about this one last month, and man am I excited! And for many to all of the same reasons you pointed out.

Let's hope the buzz builds in the next 7 months. I'm really hoping this is going to be my movie of 2007.
