I really have no place doing a post about comic books. I don't read them (with an exception I'm getting to), I never really have. When I was going through some stuff at my mother's house a month ago I found a box of the comics I read in Junior High, and it was all Archie and Uncle Scrooge comics - not really the height of what the medium has to offer.
But then Joss Whedon started writing Fray and, being the freak for all-things-Whedon that I am, I snatched all of those up, and enjoyed it. I know it wasn't the finest comics had to offer either, but it was in the Buffyverse (albeit a few hundred years later), and Joss was there, and it had its moments.
And for the past year Whedon's been doing a run on Astonishing X-Men and I've likewise snatched all of these up. I don't read reviews of comics and stay pretty much out of "comic fandom", basically just because I could never possibly catch up and really have no idea where to even start, but I do know a couple people who are very much into comics and they've both said that Whedon's X-Men stuff is being very well-received, so I feel alright in saying I think they've been tremendously enjoyable. I'm sure that, not knowing a lot about X-history, this being the first X-Men comics I've ever read (oh, I did read the Dark Phoenix series, too, just remembered that); anyway I'm sure there are all sorts of references and what not that I'm missing, but it's still been a really entertaining read.
Why am I posting this, you ask? Because the last issue of the 12-issue run comes out today, of course! And I am swooping to the comic-store after work and can't wait. Whatever will happen? And, more importantly, will Joss get to direct an X-Men movie someday? I mean, if Brett-fucking-Ratner can, anybody should be able to.
