Because I'm a super-geek, and I've been updating my calendar with the release dates of movies through the rest of 2005, I thought I'd pass along a lil' check list for everyone else to enjoy. Part of my inspiration is I'm thinking hard on the subject of Autumn, being sick to death of this heat, and maybe if I just think about it hard enough it will come and leave evil summer dead and buried.
Anyway, these are the movies being released thorugh the remainder of the year that I am commanding anyone and everyone to give a chance since I will be doing so myself for whatever elaborate or superficial reason I deem them worthy. Release dates will be subject to where you live - the dates I'm posting are when they're released here in NYC, beacon of first-come-first-served entertainment, and will presumably trickle out to all you folks of lesser realms eventually.
August 19th:
Red Eye - Yes, Wes Craven just disappointed me terribly. But I love Rachel McAdams, I love Cillian Murphy, and I love the trailer God help me. And from what I hear it's a solid thriller.
August 26th:
The Chumscrubber - It's hard to figure out exactly when this thing will start playing here, there are release dates all over the place, but I think this is the right one for here. Anyway, it's been said that people that love Donnie Darko will love this, and that's enough to sell me.
The Constant Gardener - I am apparently, along with my roommate, one of two people in the world that wasn't brought to full climax by City of God, Fernando Meirelles' last film. I just thought... meh. Good to look at, a little show-offy and boring, though. Anyway, his new flick looks interesting enough and with a fantastic enough cast to get me to the theater.
The Brothers Grimm - See my last post.
The Baxter - I've had like fifty missed opportunities to see this film, which sucks, especially since, at the first missed opportunity, my lover Justin Theroux was there. From what my roommates say, who've seen it, it's hysterical. I'm sold.
September 16th:
Proof - Jake Gyllenhaal.
September 23rd:
A History of Violence - Cronenberg's new film. The previews aren't really grabbing me, but I will see anything Cronenberg does. He's the God of Icky Things!
Tim Burton's Corpse Bride - I love The Nightmare Before Christmas. Unreasonably so. Tim Burton + Stop-Motion Animation = My Ass In The Theater.
September 30th:
Serenity - I've spoken once or twice about Joss Whedon on here, I think.
October 21st:
Strangers With Candy - Hobo Camp? Hobo Camp!
November 4th:
Jarhead - Jake Gyllenhaal!
November 18th:
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire - Yet another no brainer.
December 9th:
Brokeback Mountain - Guess who's gettin' gay?
The Chronicles of Narnia : The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - I feel really bad for all those theater workers who have to put letters up on the marquee with this one. Nothing stands a chance against me going to see Brokeback on opening night, but I plan on seeing this too, if only because Tilda Swinton looks totally kick ass as the White Witch. Plus, maybe if I close my eyes and squint I can pretend I'm watching another Lord of the Rings movie.
Memoirs of a Geisha - It's really too early to decide if I'll want to see this right away or not, since I haven't seen any footage or images except a random photo here and there. But I like Ziyi Zhang an awful lot, even if she's the wrong ethinicity to play a geisha, and I'm curious.
December 14th:
King Kong - Cue geek-gasm.
There are surely (don't call me Shirley!) films that I'm missing here, that are either flying under the radar right now or I am forgetting, and my interest in some of these may wane with their arrival. But for now, this is IT, the map of my movie-going year. There are so many of these I am salivating at the thought of - it's gonna be a good Fall!
