In The Wake Of Potter

I think I'm suffering from PHPA, otherwise known as "Post-Harry Potter Ambivilence". I can't decide what to read! Okay, my story's not entirely true, I did just fly through Richard Matheson's Hell House, which was a good, quick read, took me two nights. But now I'm just staring at the mountain of books on my bookshelf and I don't know where to go next.

I mentioned earlier I'd been reading the intro to a book of H.P. Lovecraft stories, but it's not really igniting my interest quite yet. I know, as a student of horror, I should read some of his stuff... I'm actually pretty sure I did read something in college, but I can't for the life of me remember what and that bodes ill to me. His whole "Cluthu Mythos" schtick... I just dunno. If there are any fans out there who can make me be excited to read some of his stuff, have a go, please, I'd love to have some enthusiasm for it going in.

[SPOILERS IN THIS PARAGRAPH] Hell House was good, though I wasn't really happy with its ending, I really expected a different twist other than yes, there is a Ghost after all, and everyone was right. I was sure that "lesbian bitch" Edith had gone psycho and was doing the killing, or that Fischer had been possessed by Belasco the first time he was in the house and was still carrying it around with him... but no, Belasco was the ghost, he was the only one, he was buried under the chapel, the end. I mean, I was obviously pretty wrapped up in the story that I had so many theories as to where it was going, but I felt a little let down by the end. Still, some really spooky scenes, and some downright sick stuff too - like I did not expect it to be so sexually graphic, for one; Matheson's I Am Legend, which I read a few weeks earlier (and loved) did not prepare me for that. So, around the time Florence Tanner's nipples were nearly gnawed off, I was a little freaked. [END SPOILER WARNING]

My choices of what to read next are pretty random. There's the Lovecraft stories. Also I'm eyeing Breakfast of Champions, by Vonnegut. I've been telling myself I need to read some non-fiction, but I can't figure out what. Maybe a biography? The boyfriend's been nagging at me for years to read the serial killer Pee Wee Gaskins autobiography, he says it's absolutely horrifying. Sigh. I just don't know!

Damn you, Harry Potter! You've left me baffled. You little prick.
