Good Morning, World

The first thing I saw when I flopped on my couch after a long annoying morning of travel back from Montreal yesterday was the above short film from Thunder Road and The Beta Test writer-director-actor slash MNPP fave Jim Cummings, and it couldn't have been more perfect -- as in I literally think it's a perfectly executed and written and performed comic short, and also as in it was exactly what I needed to decompress in that moment. If you'd like to hear Cummings talk about the short IndieWire spoke with him right here -- he says something lovely things about what it's like out there for somebody trying to make their own movies these days, and that's why we love him! Okay yes we also love him because he's friggin' adorable and... speaking of (ahem)... I don't want to ruin the last act of the short film if you haven't watched it yet, so watch it first and then and only then hit the jump for exactly what you should be expecting to see, once you've watched the film...

Didn't like this a bit and I usually like his stuff. I posted on twitted and he DM'd me and said he was truly sorry I was upset and hoped I would remain a fan. That was nice of him. But I don't need a straight man writing a part for himself ending with him getting fucked in the ass. I don't get it. I always thought he was hot but this doesn't satisfy any fantasy I may have. Like I said I don't get it.

Well the "joke" isn't that a straight man is playing gay, or "eww gross gay sex stuff" - it doesn't feel like straight guys naughty winking like the Deadpool movies do to me. It's just a riff on the MCU being so sexless and homophobic, which the short gets explicitly into directly before the sex scene. Anyway I thought it was a very funny and clever way to call them out and wasn't offended at all but obviously one's mileage varies

I felt similar to when I watch a film such as NYNPHOMANIAC. I think why does this man feel he has anything to say about women's sexuality. I like that film and many other male directed films about women but I think when closely examined the argument doesn't hold-up. The more "mileage" I gain I'm beginning to think we should pretty much stay in our own lane. Not against creativity but write about what you know.

I thought it was hysterical. Had some great lines about China and Marvel movies--even the Taiwanese boyfriend joke was funny. But the sex scene was so...unnecessary that it just about trivializes the entire short.

It's like..."Okay. They're not using lube. Why do I need to see this?"

I read Sissyinhwd's post before watching it thinking they were being a tad dramatic, but I get their point.
