High and Low (1963)
Kingo Gondo: Why should you and I hate each other?Ginjirô: I don't know. I'm not interested in self-analysis.I do know my room was so cold in winter and so hot insummer I couldn't sleep. Your house looked like heaven, high up there. That's how I began to hate you.

What do we think about Spike Lee remaking this movie
with Denzel Washington & Jeffrey Wright? I might have
been more skeptical about remaking Kurosawa if I hadn't
completely and totally adored Oliver Hermanus' Living
just a couple years ago. And High and Low's story is timely.
(Also -- Denzel Washington & Jeffrey Wright!!)

I think HIGH AND LOW is one of the best films ever made. I like Spike Lee's film for The most part, but we can't forget his total lack of Asian sensibilities apparent in his awful remake of OLDBOY. I can't think of any Kurosawa film that needs remaking.
Oh god I forgot about his Oldboy remake! I had totally blocked that out. Horror.
This is my favorite Kurosawa. I was skeptical when I sat down to watch it since from the synopsis it sounded quite talky for one of his films but it was riveting.
I'm ambivalent about the remake. Obviously his work has been reimagined successfully before and I'm all for an intelligent, thought provoking interpersonal drama but I'm not sure Spike Lee is suited to be the one at the helm.
