I ended up starting two shows over the weekend -- I watched the first episode of Mr. and Mrs. Smith (really liked it, wanna lick Donald Glover etc.) and I watched the first two episodes of the new season of Feud, subtitled Capote vs. the Swans -- about the author's falling out with the NY socialites he'd brefriended after he told all their secrets in an Esquire piece. These photos are of Russell Tovey in the latter -- he plays some married rough trade that Truman picks up in a bath-house, as seen in these blessed images. Most of the opinions I've seen on the series have been negative but I'm really enjoying it? I'm primed to love stories about New York and writers and gay villains though -- it's all very much in my wheelhouse. And I love the basic thrust of the show so far which is we are not your playthings, your pets, straight ladies. Capote's by no means a hero here, but the show's purposefully complicating that archetype -- the sexless fag who exists to be a lapdog for women who need to be told they look pretty and they're so much better than their men etc. I've never had time for that particular bullshit and so I'm happy to watch an entire show about it! If that's what you're seeing, you're seeing something very different from what I am. I'm seeing a selfish, narcissistic, entitled, social climbing dickbag using people who trusted him to prop up his failing talent in the most vicious way possible. Capote and his self serving tortured genius act disgusts me, always has.
I am seeing all of those things - like I said, he's no hero - but I'm also seeing a bunch of dumb spoiled jerks who trotted him around as a toy and were surprised when they got bit. They saw what he was possible of from the start, they loved his nastiness when it wasn't aimed at them, and they thought they were untouchable.
How's Demi in it,I was hoping for a comeback of sorts and for Diane Lane too.
Demi got my favorite line of the show so far, but it seems as if her role will be small at this point -- who knows though, there are several more episodes and the thing shifts all around time-wise
The podcast Bad Gays had a great episode on Capote. It's balanced and insightful, like the whole series: https://badgayspod.com/episode-archive/s4-truman-capote
I'm enjoying both shows.
I was home sick a few days, so I finished Smith.Loved it, and Glover looks fantastic. His wardrobe is perfect. Really fun show.
Love The Swans, cant wait for more Calista in the next episodes. Plus, what a gorgeous show it is! My favorite time period.
There's a David Susskind interview with Capote on Tubi of all places. Shot about a year after Babe Paley's death, and Truman is fascinatingly equally remorseful and defensive.
I love the Swans show! Great fun. But I still feel like whatever Capote possessed that charmed them all, hasn't been communicated. Maybe it's difficult to fully capture charisma of such a high grade. And as I've always thought, no one ever talks about one critical factor in the making of In Cold Blood: how an infinitely queeny toy dog of a homosexual was able to gain the confidence of all of Holocomb, Kansas! I mean, really, whatever he had was a super power.
