Pretty Scared Woman

Julia Roberts should star in more horror movies. As anyone who has seen her Drink The Juice Shelby, she can play scared incredibly well. And oh then there was the back-to-back thrillers of Flatliners and Sleeping With the Enemy! We love us some Sleeping With the Enemy. Anyway Sam Esmail's latest Netflix venture, the apocalyptic Leave the World Behind, isn't entirely a horror movie, but it's close enough to remind me of this fact, and I reviewed the movie over at Pajiba today. Do we think it was the massive flop that was Mary Reilly that scared her off the genre? Has anyone tried to watch Mary Reilly in the past twenty years? Maybe I should re-watch it again and see if it's aged better than its reputation might suggest. I just remember everybody at the time was like, "WHY WON'T AMERICA'S SWEETHEART SMILE DAMMIT???" How exhausting that must have been for her.

Unlikeable characters can be unlikeable; Julia was just unlikeable in a "so-so" film that used way too much CGI.

Julia and Mahershala are great in it. I enjoyed it, and wished they hadn't have explained iwhat was happening via Mahershala's character. I think the film's greatest innovation could have been that the characters knew nothing about what was happening. It does get close to that, and the whether or not the explanations are accurate is unknown.

I meant to say unlikeable characters can be likeable...

I felt similarly about the book. It was an interesting premise for an oblique angle on apocalypse, done tastefully, and I enjoyed the leisurely pace of the first half, but it failed to build to anything--narratively, psychologically, thematically--that made the set up worthwhile.

Mary Reilly is misunderstood and deserves a rewatch,i'd certainly love to know what your review would be like,it was lumped in with the Dracula's Wolf's and Frankenstein's,it has various problems a wobbly irish accent for Julia though she's actually pretty solid and Malkovich's lack of sexual allure,it has great production design,a wonderful score and some striking scenes, the film poster's nice too, also a campy Glenn Close,it's not perfect but it's certainly not the disaster it was reported to be in 1996,.

I literally want the two hours of my life back!!!! What a stupid, stupid movie. So many answers left unanswered. Julie Roberts and Ethan Hawk must have been desperate for money. Awful movie!!!
