You know that a documentary about a filmmaker is doing its job when you find yourself wanting to watch (or rewatch) every film that person made before the doc is over, and that's how I felt this past weekend watching Merchant Ivory, the new doc on director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant and writer Ruth Prawer Jhabvala -- the doc is screening at DOC NYC here in New York this upcoming weekend and Ivory will be there in person and I strongly recommend you go! Or if you're not in New York keep your eyes peeled for the doc -- it does its job splendidly. And to get to the above gif, which is no doubt what grabbed your attention -- that's actor Perry King in Ivory's 1975 film The Wild Party, which I watched immediately following the doc. It's been on my list ever since it was mentioned a lot when Damien Chazelle's Babylon was coming out, as they're basically doing the same thing i.e. putting the seediness of early Hollywood on full lurid display. Not that there's anything "seedy" about naked Perry King! For some variations (slowed down, zoomed in) on the above gif (which is all the skin we get in the movie) hit the jump...

Perry King made me gay!

After Ishmael Merchant died, I posted a comment on Roger Ebert's website then. His post on Merchant stated that he was survived by his partner James Ivory. Total shocker to me at the time. I never knew. My comment to Ebert was something like - did you just out Merchant Ivory as a couple? Ebert's quick reply to me (he did reply often) was very strongly worded that it was common knowledge among everyone, with the implication that I was being ridiculous for accusing him. I felt a bit admonished, but did not take it personally. And learning that they were a couple was a major revelation to me.
