This week marked the 50th anniversary of one of my favorite horror movies, the strange and surreal Messiah of Evil! And so I wrote about the movie for Mashable -- click here to read that. I only myself became aware of Messiah within the past few years -- as per everything cool I learned about it from our Final Girl fave Stacie Ponder first. But the film was obscure for a very long time, until the last decade or so when it started getting noticed thanks to a couple of physical media releases. And now the movie's streaming on both Shudder and Amazon (there is a shitty-quality free copy of it on Prime, so pay the two bucks here to rent it or watch it on Shudder, where they have the beautiful restored version.) As I say in my Mashable piece this movie's a mess but it somehow works because or in spite of that, and the two scenes pictured here -- the movie theater scene and the grocery store scene -- are legit masterpieces of tension-building. I hope I turn on some people to it who haven't seen this groovy weirdo before! It's choice stuff!

The scene in the grocery store is a stone cold classic!
This is a birthday worth celebrating! I’ve been a huge fan of this movie since I first saw it 20 years ago, after which I hunted for a decent print for years.
