Experience The Skinamarink Experience

After all my relentless pushing of director Kyle Edward Ball's ace experimental horror film Skinamarink for months now -- I was one of the lucky people who saw it during the Fantasia Film Festival last August, and my review at Pajiba was one of the first ones (which is how a quote of mine made it onto the poster and into the trailer...

... as opposed to all of the fancier folks like the New York Times who hopped onboard later) -- you'd think I'd have done up a post yesterday when the movie dropped onto Shudder! I did tweet but then I got caught up in working on a piece that was due elsewhere. Anyway we're here today and that's what counts. Especially since there's something even more worth sharing -- speaking of The New York Times there is an interview with Ball in there today!

Well technically it's a chat between Ball and director Robbie Banfitch, whose found-footage horror film The Outwaters (more on that one soon) is coming out next week. That's the two of them glimpsed shooting their respective movies above (that's Ball on the left making the infamous chair magic happen in Skinamarink)   -- I feel as if it's important to note here, since this is MNPP after all, that these are two gay men who directed these movies. We love to see it! Anyway go read that, go watch and support these movies, and here's the latest trailer for Skinamarink below (yes this is the one with my quote, because why not make it about me in the end):

Admittedly I didn't see the film in a theatre but on Shudder. Big horror fan hence Shudder subscription, but I'm also considerably older than those whose praising or damning the movie I've seen since viewing it. I attempted to give myself over to it, but alas, found it too repetitive and more style than substance when it comes to scary. I admire Ball for getting it out there and wish him well as we need more people who take chances. I wanted to fall for the film but I simply couldn't. I fell asleep at one point, rewound and and tried again. Film simply doesn't work for me on any level except one of respect for the film maker and would be willing to watch another venture of his. Maybe my reaction has to do with my age, having seen more than my share of horror films over the years. Well, I tried, but would be hard to recommend this film to others.

I worked very hard -- sometimes I think too hard, in that I talked about it too much -- in my review to make it clear that this movie wasn't gonna be for everybody! I get it.

OK I just have to say I remember Robbie Banfitch from tumblr c. 1 million years ago. He used to post...cynical self-help videos, or something? but mostly pics of his hot little ottery self. What was it called...oh right:

Anyone just dismissing Skinamarink out of hand will never ever be my friend. Thanks so much for championing this one, right from the get-go. It's a genuine original.
