I know people are hyped for Nicolas Cage to be playing Dracula and I'm not here to yuck anybody's yum -- by all means be excited. I personally am kind of over Cage's scenery-chewing -- he was good in Pig! I can like him at subdued registers. But that's not why we even have a "Nicolas Cage" I suppose, and it never has been. Which is why I've never been a huge fan. But anyway, Renfield -- Renfield is a movie about Dracula (Cage) and his toxic relationship with his man-servant Renfield, played by the ever pristine and lovely Nicky Hoult. Two Nicks in one movie! I'll have to make a "Nickelodeon" joke in my eventual review.
Anyway the trailer dropped this morning and it's the reason we're here -- it maybe gives away an awful lot of movie I think, but then I haven't seen the movie, have I? Perhaps most of this is just an opening sequence and they've sufficiently tricked me. I do like the gay-ish vibe, but I hope that's not just played for laughs. Vampire comedies are a difficult tone to navigate though, especially action-tinged ones -- like I apologize for bringing up Van Helsing, but y'all made me do it. All that said watch the trailers and judge for yourselves -- I'm in for Hoult, of course.
Renfield is out on April 14th.
