Good Morning, World

I'd been wanting to re-watch the original 1978 Superman film ever since Richard Donner passed -- well scratch that, ever since Ned Beatty passed a couple of weeks before that, even. Bad month for Superman fans! Somebody check on Gene Hackman, please. Anyway I finally got around to that last night and man is it just a delight every time I revisit. I know some people think the prologue -- everything before we have Chris Reeve...

... and Margot Kidder setting off their charisma fireworks inside the Daily Planet -- goes on too long but I actually love all of that stuff, the time spent on Krypton, the Smallville origin stuff, I wouldn't cut a lick. That said the film really flies (I apologize) once it hits Metropolis, and there will never be a better Superman than Reeve. That was just casting fallen from the heavens. And speaking of Godly, here's a video I'd never seen before I found it last night of him hitting the gym for the role!

While Reeve is perhaps best known for his role as the macho superhero Superman, he also took on a role in 1982 film Deathtrap, which saw him share a kiss with co-star Michael Caine.

I agree! I LOVE every minute of the film, to me it's the epitome of what a superhero film should be. You can have all your dark brooding damaged Batmans, X-Men etc. I want something that is fun and feel good when I go to see a movie like that.

It has been a tough period with the marvelous Ned Beatty and now Donner. I worry for Valerie Perrine, I know she's terribly ill with severe Parkinson's disease. So sad, she always seemed like a funny, intelligent woman as well as a terrific actress.

The chemistry between Reeve and Kidder was so delicious. Kidder exuded such amazing energy as Lois that when Bryan Singer tried to homage the original with his weak "Superman Returns" I kept scratching my head in a "what were they thinking" way watching Kate Bosworth's bitter, depressive Lois. Kidder and Reeve will always be the measuring stick by which all future Lois & Clarks will be judged.
