5 Off My Head: King Corman

It's important we celebrate our legends while we've still got them (also when they're gone, but before is better), and with that in mind today we're giving some love to famed producer, director, and B-Movie Maniac Roger Corman, who's turning 95 years awesome today! With a resume like his, including over 400 producing credits stretching from the mid-50s until right fucking now, one doesn't even really know where to begin -- the physical media supplier Shout Factory! has an entire sale on their website right now only devoted to Roger Corman titles! And it's a huge sale! So what we need to do is focus. If we narrow our attentions down to his directorial efforts... well there's still over fifty titles. But the percentage of those that I have actually seen brings us into a manageable range. And so, a list! Of faves!

My 5 Favorite "Directed by Roger Corman"'s

Runners-up: Pit and the Pendulum, Bloody Mama,
The Raven, Tales of Terror,
Little Shop of Horrors

What are your favorite Roger Corman movies?

I’ve seen a bunch of films he produced, but I don’t remember seeing any he actually directed. I’ll have to get watching.

Checking my Lettboxd page for him I've seen far more of his directorial output than I would have guessed.

My top 10:

The St. Valentine's Day Massacre
I, Mobster
A Time for Killing
A Bucket of Blood
Machine Gun Kelly
X: The Man with the X-Ray Eyes
The Little Shop of Horrors
The Haunted Palace
House of Usher
The Pit and the Pendulum

I have to admit a fondness for The Raven (1963). It also contains one of my favorite movie quotes:

Dr. Craven: Oh yes, yes. Instead of facing life I turned my back on it. I know now why my father resisted Dr. Scarabus. Because he knew that one cannot fight evil by hiding from it. Men like Scarabus thrive on the apathy of others. He thrived on mine and that offends me. By avoiding contact with the brotherhood I've given him freedom to commit his atrocities, unopposed.
