The Millennium Re-Approaches

From one pandemic to another, here's some good news -- Playbill's reporting that the most recent Broadway production of Tony Kushner's masterpiece Angels in America is now streaming on National Theater's platform (thx Dennis). You have to subscribe to their service in order to watch it, which costs $12.99 a month, but if you're a theater-fan I can't imagine that not being worth it. It's more than worth it for this single show alone honestly, which I managed to see on stage twice -- it stars Andrew Garfield, Denise Gough, Nathan Lane, Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. James McArdle, and (naked) Russell Tovey. Here is the link to the first part, and here is a link to the second (and I am certainly not saying you should just go looking for nudity but Russell Tovey gets naked right at the start of Part 2). It's obviously a time commitment, but less so if you're watching at home! And in all seriousness it's one of the most important pieces of art of ever, this is a magnificently mounted and performed production (Nathan Lane blew my mind apart), and you will be a better human being on the other side of it. So go carve off some of your calendars and watch the damn thing.

Do we have the Pace pic?

Looks like it's Russell Tovey playing Joe Pitt in the online recordings (not Lee Pace).

PS -- I messed up, this is the Russell Tovey version from the UK, not the Lee Pace one here in the US. Tovey just showed bum. But here is a picture of Lee Pace

NealB -- Yeah I caught that after I hit publish, I've updated the post :)

I've seen this (youtube?) a while back. It's awesome either way. Garfield knocks your sox off.

I should add I've seen both versions and I love Tovey but I did think that Lee Pace gave a better performance in the role, and I wish we had that one recorded

Tiny and cut. Disappointed.

I was sitting in the front row and... he is a very very tall man... it's all about perspective

Did you get to see Tucci in Frankie and Johnny?

No that wasn't long after I first moved here in 2000 (that show was 2002) and I did NOT have the money to go to the theater then at all. I didn't see anything on the Broadway stage until 2008! And then only because it seemed like something to take my mother to do when she came to visit (we saw Patti Lupone do Gypsy, how gay is that lol)

But I have seen the photos of Tucci in that show and I weep for missing it in retrospect

James McArdle (Louis) was the artist in, Man in the Orange Shirt.
See how he and Garfield hold hands, during the curtain, of part one.
Made my feet roll up and slide under the house!

I did really enjoy this production, especially Nathan Lane’s performance and the angel design. Still, I thought Garfield was doing too much and Tovey not enough. Then again, I have a sentimental attachment to the HBO version.
