Holy Motors (2012)
Mr. Oscar: Céline, we have to laugh before midnight.
Céline: We'll do our best, Mr. Oscar.
Mr. Oscar: Who knows if we'll laugh in the next life.
For some reason I never got around to posting a proper "Rest in Peace" when the great French actress Edith Scob died back in June, so I'll use the excuse of what would've been her 82nd birthday to do that -- she worked plenty after making Holy Motors with Leos Carax all the way back in 2012 (I can't believe that movie's seven years old already -- it remains timeless) but the film, with its mournful final act, feels like a fine epitaph with its strange tendrils wound back to her beginnings.
