Lars Goes Full Inferno

A new poster for The House That Jack Built, Lars von Trier's let's be generous and call it divisive serial killer drama that premiered at Cannes this week to mass walk-outs and all kinds of sigh-inducingly predictable critical hysteria, arrived via the film's Facebook last night, seen above. Click on it to embiggen.  (And yes, there is penis.) It's an update of the 1822 painting The Barque of Dante by Eugène Delacroix, which you can see here:

This isn't the first time that we've seen this painting adopted for the means of visualizing popular entertainment (and yes I am aware that I am straining the definition of "popular entertainment" to its breaking point by calling a Lars von Trier movie that) - The Sopranos used the painting for their ad campaign circa its fifth season too:

The painting is also known as "Dante and Virgil in Hell" and apparently LVT's heaped tons of such Biblical and Philosophical references into the movie itself, which involves Matt Dillon's titular Jack confessing his crimes, in five parts, to a Virgil-type played by Bruno Ganz. Anyway you missed the film's rough trailer watch it here. It's out this fall. Expect plenty of teeth-gnashing or whatever.
