So, so many to choose from since he rarely gave anything but an exemplary performance. I'm torn between Dr. Jaquith in Now, Voyager and Alex Sebastian in Notorious but he was equally great in Casablanca and Deception and on and on.
My grandmother knew him slightly. She was a widow raising 5 daughters during the Depression so sometimes would she would serve for a well to do couple when the had guests to earn extra money and Claude was a friend of theirs who visited occasionally. She always spoke very highly of him saying he was polite, charming and kind always going out of his way to acknowledge everyone.
Notorious. But really, anything.
