Elio of the Future

.
On Wednesday I shared with y'all a quote from Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino where he talked about making an entire series of films that follow Elio and Oliver through time a la Richard Linklater's Before Sunrise trilogy - the book goes further into the future than the film does, so there are hints about where it could go in there. Well Luca's out there giving interviews still because it's still six weeks until CMBYN is even out here in the US, and he's explained more about this with Screen Daily today; he says for a first sequel he'd want to move seven years into the future (that would be 1990) getting the characters closer to the actor's actual ages:

"I want to do a sequel because Timothée Chalamet, Armie Hammer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Amira Casar, Esther Garrel – they are all gems... The texture we built together is very consistent. We created a place in which you believe in the world before them. They are young but they are growing up.

... I don’t think Elio is necessarily going to become a gay man. He hasn’t found his place yet. I can tell you that I believe that he would start an intense relationship with Marzia [Esther Garrel’s character] again.

... It is the time of the fall of communism and the start of the new world order and the so-called ’The End of History’ that Francis Fukuyama established then. It would be the beginning of the Berlusconi era in Italy and it would mean dealing with the war of Iraq.”
