The Kelly Collection

.
.
MoMA is screening all of The Great Kelly Reichardt's movies over the next week or so for a retrospective of her work and I got to see the final piece of the Kelly Puzzle last night when they screened her very first film called River of Grass from 1994. I've seen all of her films now! Which actually makes me a little bit sad - make a new one immediately just for me, Kelly!

Anyway as you see above she was there for a Q&A with the film's star (himself a director) Larry Fessenden, and the two had such a lovely fun charm together I don't think I have ever smiled so much during a Q&A in my entire life. They weren't sure they'd remember a whole lot about the making of the movie since it's been 24 years since they made it but they did a pretty good job - Kelly especially seemed to recall like it was yesterday the difficulty of making the low budget production, and said that an act of violence (being purposefully vague to avoid spoilers) in the last reel was a plot point that came about only during filming due to the frustration of making the movie.

Anyway Oscilloscope remastered the movie for a blu-ray release recently and it looked terrific - I highly recommend picking up a copy if you love Kelly Reichardt movies as well you should. Oh and here's another fun fact from the Q&A last night that I say with love in my heart - Fessenden is briefly naked in the movie and he had a surprisingly lithe little bod back in 1994 (there's a shot that scans up and down him that Reichardt admitted was stolen from the movie Poison) but when he started joking last night about that and offered to show his ass to the crowd (as pictured to the left) well... I don't think I have ever yanked my camera down into my lap quicker. We don't need to see that, Larry.
