Why indeed? Even when praising the film (as this nice little article I just read did) it seems like everybody always has to go on and on about the film being "dark" and make it sound like some kind of slog or something, when the truth couldn't be further from that - Batman Returns, for all its psycho-sexual disturbance and nose-gnawing is to my eyes some hysterically funny and endlessly quotable pop magic. What's not funny about a sewer dwelling slug-person who drools tar wanting to drop babies into toxic sludge, I ask you? That's some John Waters level hilarity. It's basically the super-villain version of Divine forcing lesbians to breed in her basement.
