Good Morning, World

.
The moment I fell for Javier Bardem (who is celebrating his 48th birthday today) was this scene in Pedro Almodovar's 1997 flick Live Flesh (which was also the first Almodovar I ever saw) -- I remember it being this scene specifically because I'd spent the movie making googly eyes at Liberto Rabal (the younger more typically pretty actor in the film; see him here) and not even noticing Javier, but then this scene, as with most Pedro Almodovar sex scenes, hits you like a tidal wave of hormones. You might say that Pedro knows how to shoot sexy! (You might.)

My first Almodovar was Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, which was so utterly delightful. I saw Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down, Matador, Laws of Desire and have since become such a fan. I love Volver, All About My Mother and so many others. The only one I don't care for is that silly airplane movie.

It´s a very underrated movie. It´s one of the best Javier performances (and that´s saying something) and José Sancho is a force of nature (he won the Supporting Goya, he was a really great actor and maybe the only conservative one to feature in one of his films, he even said he didn´t want to meet Pedro at first). But from what I remember, the movie got swept into a controversy at that time: Pedro was accused of nepotism giving Liberto (the grandson of Francisco Rabal) the lead role, his performance was thrashed badly and the promotional posters were removed from the subway and bus stops...it seems Pedro sometimes get into this perfect storms situations, like last year too. People is waiting for him with the knives out. Another thing that I love from this movie it´s that it is one of the most realistic Almodóvar movies or at least one that shows the real Madrid better than other of his campier films. You can see the transition to the more modern city that it is nowadays...
