Good Ghosts and Bad Girls

.
Olivier Assayas' latest film Personal Shopper, starring a luxuriously grief-stricken Kristen Stewart, is out this weekend - I reviewed it way back in October at the NYFF, you can read that here. I didn't love it as much as I wanted to at the time but it has hung and hung and hung on in my brain so I'm pretty prepped to watch it a second time and roll it around in my brain some more; reactions like this tremendously moving one from David Erlich at IndieWire have aided to that effect.

Also I saw the trailer with a mixed (i.e. not arthouse) crowd before a screening a couple of weeks ago and they LAUGHED at the film's title, they openly laughed, which has made me defensive for the film - it's certainly not worthy of that reaction. The Twilight thing has really clouded the mainstream view of K-Stew - smart critics (like me!) are on her side but you tell somebody who doesn't know an Assayas from their elbow that you take her seriously as an actress and all you're gonna get are bewildered eyeballs back at you.

In related news I'll be spending a little "us time" together with Mr. Assayas in person for real this weekend -- a few of his films are screening at the Metrograph and he is doing a Q&A tomorrow afternoon with none other than Greta fucking Gerwig after a screening of his 2004 film Clean, which I have not yet seen. You think I'd miss such a thing???
