Great Moments In Movie Shelves #76

.
I've spent the past few weeks trying to not think about Penny Dreadful - the third season ended with an ending, like kaput out of nowhere, that wasn't entirely satisfying. (For a good dissection of why it left a bad taste read my pal Tom Blunt's thoughts on it here.)

But it's the goddess Eva Green's birthday today, and she certainly was never the problem with anything, ever, like really ever, so let's side-step our sadness about what will never be to what was, which was often entirely glorious. Like for instance...

... the sight of the woman herself in a Victorian collar fanning out tarot cards set against a wall of leather-bound beauties. This is why cavemen painted on walls, people.

This scene is actually in the very first episode of the show - Green's character Vanessa Ives is enticing Josh Hartnett's character Ethan Chandler into fighting the good fight against Evil... which turns out, in the end, to be nowhere near that simple. But for the moment...

... goddamn do they make a strapping duo, eh? It was funny going back to this scene and seeing the things they'd set up to come which the show would eventually, you know, play its cards to. Like Vanessa has than pick a card any card, and he picks...

... The Lovers card, and the music (oh my god the glorious music on this show) swells, and they smirk at each other. Do note the Scorpion symbol on the card -- that's an image any fan of the show came to know only too well in relation to Miss Ives. But seriously...

... what a pair. As Ethan chooses his card Vanessa tells him to "Look into my eyes. Believe." As if we could do anything else, Eva Green. As if we could do anything else.
