The Exorcist III (1990)

This is of course always cited as one of the greatest horror scares of all time and dude for good reason, it totally is -- no matter how many times I see it I jump, I jump, I jump right out of my skin. I doubt that breaking it up into gifs like this gets it across as well as watching the scene unfold in actual real and slow time does though, so here, just watch the scene:

But breaking it up into gifs does I think highlight the fantastic structure - the way the camera-work lulls us into a measured pace and a safe distance and uses that sudden nightmarish zoom to burst all of the blood-vessels in our eyeballs. 

Another thing I noticed dissecting this scene here was the fake-out involving the nurse's closing of the door - I always thought that the killer came from the hallway just beyond the room the nurse just locked, but as you can see there the killer actually comes right through the door we just watched the nurse leisurely snap shut and lock - what a total mind-fuck this scene is! Good work, William Peter Blatty! Just ace film-making all around.

Speaking of, it's Blatty's 88th birthday today - the author of the original Exorcist novel only directed two movies in his directing career: this here sequel and ten years earlier a film called The Ninth Configuration, which I swear I've seen but have little recollection of and our archives here offer zero assistance. It stars Stacy Keach and Scott Wilson and is sort of a spin-off from The Exorcist, as it's about the astronaut at the dinner party who Regan says is "gonna die up there." Anybody seen The Ninth Configuration then?
