Pics of the Day

.
The competitive slate for Sundance got dropped today along with pictures from all the film -- you can see the entire line-up over here but we're focusing in on one movie, The Birth of a Nation, which was written and directed by and stars Nate Parker. We like Nate Parker very much, and we've been clamoring for him to get some solid work, so bless him for going off and making his own if Hollywood's typically slow on the uptake.

The film also stars Armie Hammer, Armie Hammer's great big neck beard, Gabrielle Union, and Jackie Earle Haley (is it wrong to assume in this context that Jackie Earle Haley is clearly playing a horrible racist?) and here's the description:

"Set against the antebellum South, this story follows Nat Turner, a literate slave and preacher whose financially strained owner, Samuel Turner, accepts an offer to use Nat’s preaching to subdue unruly slaves. After witnessing countless atrocities against fellow slaves, Nat devises a plan to lead his people to freedom."
