And They Pull Me Back In...

.
I didn't even bother writing up the news last week that Matthew McConaughey was in talks to play the bad guy in the movie adaptation of Stephen King's The Dark Tower series because that ham gets on my last nerve and if he was gonna be spreading his ham all over the project than my interest was fading fast. But now they're saying that no less than Idris Elba is in talks to play the head gunslinger himself, Roland Deschain, and I am, naturally, torn. Torn asunder even!

I have never read The Dark Tower books -- when I was around 12 or 13 years old I tried reading the third book, The Waste Lands, somehow not realizing I was dropping into a series in the middle, and I was SO confused. (Cut me some slack, this was before the internet and it was the only Stephen King book left at my teensy hometown library that I hadn't read yet.) I don't think I ever finished it once I realized the library didn't have the first two books, and I haven't tried since. Any fans? Should I pick up the boxed-set?

I was looking forward to it when Javier Bardem was supposed to do it a far years ago. Now not so much.

I've read the first five books and they're all pretty great. Books two and three are my favorites. Definitely worth reading. And the character Hammy McGee is playing is barely present in the series after the first book, so don't let that stop you w/r/t the movies. Idris Elba is inspired casting for Roland - the usual fanboy idiots will howl about changing Roland's race, but fuck those guys.
