Today's Mood

.
I don't know if you noticed but yesterday we celebrated the fact that today is the 20th anniversary of Copycat and earlier today we celebrated the fact that today is the 20th anniversary of The Doom Generation... and now here we are celebrating the fact that today is the 20th anniversary of Leaving Las Vegas. October 27th 1995 was quite a day to go to the movies, huh?

Out of these three films it has probably been the longest since I've seen this one, even though it deeply affected me at the time -- in fact that's probably why it's been so long. This movie really hurts.

But it's also brought me joy in the years since - I've shared this story before but one of the first gifts my boyfriend ever gave me in our relationship, many moons ago, was a flask, a reference to the scene in this film where Elisabeth Shue gives Nicolas Cage's alcoholic a flask as a hella-depressing yet tremendously moving symbol of her total acceptance of Who He Is. I'm not a suicidal drunk or anything (no really, not really) but I got the message and the message was... "Romance!!!"
