Just watched this free on Netflix streaming! Vivien was lovely, the leading man a total dud, Ralph Richardson creepy, and the first time the "train" was shown in a "snowstorm," I burst out laughing!

One of those oft-remade classics Hollywood never gets right...

rico, I don't think the 1935 with Greta Garbo is so terrible. Freddie March is Count Vronsky, but Basil Rathbone is Karanin and he's rather good in it, as is Freddy Bartholomew as their son.

Actually, Garbo did a silent version, too. Don't mind the MGM sound version...it's lovely to look at it and Greta postures beautifully, backed by a top supporting cast. But it's the MGM Reader's Digest version...

As for Viv's version, I was surprised how bloodless the whole thing was... Even Leigh didn't set the screen on fire as usual. Perhaps she was in a depressive phase.
