The end of August will mark one hundred years since the great actress Ingrid Bergman was born, and The Film Experience is celebrating her legacy all month -- twas my task to tackle her fourth Hollywood film, the 1941 version of Dr. Jekyl and Mr Hyde, and if you head over there you'll see I did just that this past Saturday. The movie's not great but she's certainly lively in it, and I could see early echoes of her later work, especially Alicia in Notorious (specifically whenever she's drunk). There's also a risque edge to the movie that surprised me even now. It's some kinky shit.

the version with Frederick March and Miriam Hopkins is much better. the direction by Rouben Mamoulian is amazingly cinematic for its time and the on-screen transformation by March is unforgettable.
I said this over of TFE but how the hell did they get away with that scene of Ingrid and Lana being whipped by Spencer Tracy?! I can't believe all they had to say was to the Hayes office was that its a dream sequence, the thing is dripping with sado-masochism. This at a time when married couples were supposedly sleeping in separate beds and you couldn't say the word pregnant in a movie.
