Give Jobs A Hand

.
The first full-length trailer for Danny Boyle's Steve Jobs, starring Michael Fassbender as the big man behind the big Mac, has arrived this morning (not counting that teaser trailer we saw several weeks back) and it looks great! The movie's out in October.

I see people on Twitter whinging that Fassy doesn't look like Jobs but that's got to be the most boring complaint in the history of complaints, right next to "Why isn't it in color?" or "Why are there subtitles?" and you should be ashamed of yourself if that's what you're focusing on. All that matters is that he captures the spirit of what's on the page and if what's on the page captures some truth about this man's legacy then we'll be good! Anyway here's the thing:

I think you're underrating how much physicality and casting contributes to a convincing performance. I don't think Jesse Eisenberg's face looks all that much like Mark Zuckerberg's, but he's definitely the right physical type for that kind of role. I wouldn't ever cast Channing Tatum as a geek type, even if I do think he's an excellent actor and probably a lot smarter in real life than the characters he plays.

And yes, Fassbender is seriously, seriously distracting here. There's just no way to hide his extreme European chiseled-ness. And I don't buy that someone who looks like him would ever have the kind of interests and drive that Steve Jobs did.

Well Ashton Kutcher looked a lot like Jobs when Jobs was younger, so I'm assuming everyone complaining about Fassbender ran out and saw the Kutcher movie the day it opened, right?

Oh, wait...
