On Golden Poe

.
What do you see when you think of Edgar Allan Poe? Because when I think of Poe, who was born 206 years ago today, I think of the above image. I think of stringy black hair and hangdog features with cousin lust burning beneath his defeated eyes. What I decidedly don't think of is ginger goofiness, and yet when I looked it up just now to see what actors have played him in TV or movies the first pair of names I recognized were Christopher Egan and Jesse Plemons.

Granted Plemons played him for that Drunk History show, but still. What strikes me as especially weird is those two could play brothers, so there's like an Hollywood Poe Casting Type that's totally removed from Actual Poe. You're weird, Hollywood!

This post is dedicated to the news that broke last week that Idris Elba is making an Edgar Allan Poe movie - no Elba isn't going to play Poe, I don't think, which would be a whole 'nother ball of wax. It's based on the 1978 book Poe Must Die which is about Poe fighting literal demons in NYC, which sounds right in line with our current Pride and Prejudice and Zombies versus Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter state of being. Idris will probably be playing the boxer-dude who helps Poe kick demon ass. My English professors would be so proud of me, these sentences I'm writing!
