Have You Seen Nightcrawler Yet?

.
I know that picture isn't from Nightcrawler but come on, look at him there, you gonna deny me posting that? Anyway I never pay any attention to box office (that's a game that's burned me too often) but I just checked and the film has made 21 million bucks so far, which is more than I anticipated, so I expect some of you have seen it now. When I saw it and loved it (and reviewed it) most people hadn't seen it yet, so I'm curious now to hear what y'all thought of it. Any thoughts? Share in the comments! It really is one of my favorites of the year so far and I hope I can see it again soon - let's keep the drum-beat alive for Jake to score a much-deserved Oscar nomination, people!

For me, it's a great story but the performances weren't great. Jake felt very "acty." Much like in "Prisoners," where he adopted the blinking tic. Here it was his decision to lose a bunch of weight, and his character felt like a caricature. Rene Russo was weak at best. So I liked the movie but not the performances.

The opposite is true of "Birdman." Fantastic performances in a film that rambled and meandered far too long. It kept seeming to be done, and then there was another scene, and another, and it all just became tiresome.

Very unsettling film. I heard Jake describe the character as a coyote - a predator who's always on the outside, always talking, always analyzing situations as it waits for its next meal. I thought that was a very apt comparison.

Maybe it influenced my entire perception of the movie. I also felt very unnerved by the ending.

I saw it opening weekend and was really impressed with the performances, story, cinematography, and how the sense of suspense, dread, and/or discomfort were built up in key scenes. I would be delighted to see Oscar nominations for Jake and Rene.

Doug, Jake's cop in Prisoners had way more than just the tics. Sure they're noticeable, but that's like throwing the baby out with bathwater. They were like an artistic emphasis (think all the sophisticated flourishes in gesture, phrasing of...Hopkins!) on how doggone tired this guy was staying professional. And if he's "acty" in Nightcrawler, then so are Bale's American Psycho and Hoffman's Midnight Cowboy. Calculating hustlers! Aspergers autodidact sounds like a cop-out, but it's a reasonable character for the story. This was a caricature played with as much understated realism as possible. A parable.
