Natalie Portman's turning 33 today and so we're exploiting her Jesus Year for this week's edition of Beauty Vs Beast over at The Film Experience - The Black Swan Edition! I know lots of people, probably some of y'all included, don't think she deserved her Oscar that year but I totes co-sign that statue, I think she's glorious in the movie. I have been seriously in the mood to re-watch this flick lately, what with all my ballet trips in real life - I saw it a couple of times in the theater and once when it came out onto DVD but I don't think I've revisited it since then. Have you seen it lately?

I rewatched it recently and it still holds up as a vital piece of filmmaking from the banner year that was 2010. And while I wouldn't have given Portman the statue, I agree that she's terrific (and I think she's generally kind of uneven as an actress). She was actually my least favorite of the five nominees that year, but that's no strike against her. Best Actress 2010 was an incredible lineup.
I also didn't think Natalie Portman deserved the Oscar for Black Swan, but I DO think she deserved it for her role, brief as it was, in NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU. The segment, Mira Nair, that she was in was completely captivating.
That was such a good movie with so many great actors in such surprising roles. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. Shia LeBeouf was a standout in that movie.
So, it equals out.
