Good Morning, Southern Italy

.
I'm in the middle of planning my trip to the South of Italy right now and stumbled upon that picture of Jack Lemmon naked in Billy Wilder's 1972 film Avanti!, which was apparently partially filmed on the island of Ischia, which is one of the places I am going. Other film stuff of interest for the island - there's a museum for the director Luchino Visconti, and a hefty chunk of The Talented Mr Ripley was filmed there. I'm gonna get my Jude Law on!

And my Raoul Bova on!

I'm also going to visit the city of Pompeii while I'm out there, and just a couple of weeks after Kit Harington decimates the place with his shredded abs at that...

I hope that those three shots make up for the naked Jack Lemmon, I hope I have lured you back, because I NEED YOUR HELP!!! Whenever I take a vacation I turn to you beautiful people for assistance, and you're always amazing. So I ask you again - give me recommendations! Not just on stuff to do, but any advice you've got for getting around too. We're going to be based in three spots while we're there - Naples, Ischia, and Sorrento

From these places we'll be traveling out to as many nearby places as we can, of course - for example that shot from Under the Tuscan Sun is looking down at the town of Positano, and I need to have that view in my life. (Raoul Bova included.) Alrighty if you have anything to share, hit up the comments... and thank you!

Naples is rather gross, so try and branch out as much as you can while you are there. I recommend Pompeii. We hiked Mt. Vesuvius a year ago, and it was the greatest experience of my European trip.

Yeah that's what I have heard about Naples. It's where we're flying in to, and my boyfriend knows people there, so we're staying for two nights; while we're there we'll do day trips to Pompeii and Vesuvius.

Speaking of the latter, any advice on hiking it, Fisti? I definitely want to do that. Where do you start from? There are buses that take you to a dropping off point or something right? I have only just started looking into stuff but that is totally on the list, I LOVE mountains.

Mt. Vesuvius is worth it. When I did it, a tour bus took us to a certain point, then there's a 30-minute hiking trail to get to the top. Cross your fingers for good weather with few clouds, that way you can get really beautiful panoramic views from the top. Also, if you like ruins, Herculaneum is equally as fascinating as Pompeii.

If you're hitting Sorrento, then you must be hitting the Amalfi coast. If you're not, make that a priority -- it's a can't miss part of Sorrento, and if you drink, you must try their limoncello. It also has Sentiero degli Dei (God's Trail), where on good days you can see as far as Capri. There are partial hikes and full hikes depending on how long you're willing to hike. If you have the energy, do the whole thing.

Didn't spend much time in Ischia unfortunately, but the Aragonese Castle is beautiful.

HenryK - We're def. going to be ferrying around and making a stop at Capri. Good call on Contempt!

Flickah - Oh yes Amalfi Coast is highest priority - we're staying in Sorrento cuz we found a beautiful hotel at a can't beat price but we'll be heading straight for Pasitano et al from there. Thanks for the info on hiking trails - I love to hike and expect to do a bunch.

And I'm def. gonna try to do both Pompeii and Herculaneum, that just depends on timing.

Gah I am SOOO excited.
