Broken Circle Schoenaerts

.
I only made it about half an hour into the Belgian Best Foreign Film nominee The Broken Circle Breakdown before I had to turn it off - they started doing a cutesy song and dance routine for the little girl with cancer and I was done. It just wasn't my cuppa. So I greet the news that a Belgian much more my cuppa - Matthias Schoenaerts - is next teaming up with Breakdown's director Felix Van Groeningen to make a semi-autobiographical tale about Van Groeningen's father. It's not just my dislike of Breakdown that's giving me pause though, it's also the way they're describing this new thing's story...

"It is a story of the rise and fall of two brothers who have nothing in common but who join forces to take up the reins of the Belgica, a microcosmic bar in which minor and major human comedies are played out, from racism and camaraderie to fraternity and rivalry."

Ugh that's verging on insufferable already - microbreweries and racism, ho! But I'll give Matthias the benefit of the doubt, if for nothing else than this. He is owed.
