What's The Best Movie...

.
... that you've seen so far this year?
I'm curious where we're all standing, here
on the precipice of the "Important" Movies of Fall,
and if there's anything I maybe missed I should seek out.

Right now Crystal Fairy is where I'm at. It's such a loose and upbeat movie, but I don't think that makes it slight. I was totally charmed by it and surprised at how much emotion it had earned from me at the end.

I saw Afternoon Delight last night, and I thought that might overtake it for a long stretch. The ending isn't as bold or generous as I was hoping it would be, though, but it's still really worth seeing and Kathryn Hahn is really spectacular.

Before Midnight. Just... yeah.

Will - Somehow everything having to do with Crystal Fairy just slipped right by me, I totally missed not only it but reviews too. Dunno how that happened. And I really liked the Afternoon Delight trailer, I'm glad to hear it mostly works. I love Kathryn Hahn.

Ryan - Another one I missed! I love Delpy a whole lot but I have a hard time with Ethan Hawke, even in the Before series. I'll def. see it on DVD though.

Frances Ha for sure. It's the one I was disappointed by coming out of the theater, but no film has stayed with me like this in a LONG time. So many fantastic moments.

Second would definitely be The Bling Ring. Because that film is so fucking FUN. Plus, it's probably the only film I've ever seen with my boyfriend that he's loved, so it gets points for cracking his cold heart (when it comes to film).

Frances Ha, for sure, followed closely by Upstream Color. Both of which are fan-fucking-tastic.

There have been good films, even very good films but so far this year nothing GREAT - I too like SHORT TERM 12 especially the acting. I love THE SAPPHIRES and there's just no denying seeing the truncated US version of THE GRANDMASTER on the big screen and hearing an audience collectively swoon. A FIELD IN ENGLAND surely sticks to the ribs and THIS IS THE ENDS still the funniest.
Still have a few months to go....

Before Midnight, followed closely by Frances Ha. 20 Feet from Stardom and Bling Ring trailing somewhere behind.

Haven't had a lot of movies that have connected with me yet this year. Even the good stuff that people have been talking about(Fruitvale, Blue Jasmine, Mud, No, Way Way Back, World War Z) has been so-so.

Blue Jasmine, the best I've seen in a long time

Stoker, or maybe No if that can count for this year.

Blue Jasmine

Truthfully I haven't watched a lot but the anxiety Cate Blanchett put me through in that dark theater sealed the deal. A dream movie for an actressexul like myself.

Frances Ha by a country mile. The only thing that comes close is Before Midnight, which right now has my "Jury Prize" for the year (being the film that I admire most without actually enjoying).

Don't get me wrong, I LOVED Before Midnight, but it was very difficult to watch.

Second Matthew's choices :)

Frances Ha resonates with me. It's light (in terms of pacing)and humorous but profound. Acting is top-notch, so is the B&W cinematography.

However, I would put "Stories We Tell" before "Bling Ring". Sarah Polley is just amazing here (both as a director and "actress"). However, she's always so confident handling such a complicated story.

"Bling Ring" proves that you can make an art film that is not too deep but full of fun. I still remember that scene with the extreme long shot...breathtaking!

Sorry, I want to love "Before Sunrise", but I feel like the magic is missing. No, it's not about the romantic atmosphere or the locale, but I can't quite put my finger on it. I wasn't quite engaged the whole time (until the final scenes).

Honorable mentions: "Side Effects", "The Conjuring"

Last week I saw The Company You Keep. I know its from 2012 but you didn't specify 2013 movies. The sheer talent in that movie blew me away. Robert Redford, Shia LaBeouf, Julie Christie, Sam Elliott, Jackie Evancho, Brendan Gleeson, Terrence Howard, Richard Jenkins, Anna Kendrick, Brit Marling, Stanley Tucci, Nick Nolte, Chris Cooper, Susan Sarandon!!!!! That's a galaxy of stars and the movie was story and character driven. No gun fights, aliens, 'splosions or car chases. Even though I woulfn't recomend it to anybody under 40, I totally enjoyed it.

For now, I'll go with Frances Ha (LOVED it the first time I saw it, liked it the second and re-LOVED it the third!).
But there is some second places worth mentioning : Fruitvale Station was something, and the other three I've seen last year, but I think they only got "officially" out in 2013 in the USA :
- Sarah Polley's Stories We Tell, for reasons I think you know

- Boy Eating the Bird's Food (Greece's Academy Awards entry this year), for it's raw portrait of Greece through a single individual

- Camion ("truck" in french) for it's profound simple humanity without any over dramatized plot, which was refreshing for me (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2194870)
