Alright so I haven't technically even "watched" Dario Argento's take on Bram Stoker's most popular yarn yet, but when I saw my friend Aaron reviewed it yesterday and I realized it was out there for the getting, I went and... well, got. I suppose I'll sit down and suffer through it at some point, probably this weekend, even though I have no doubt that Aaron is right and it is atrocious. I don't know what happened to Dario but man, it's been sad to watch.

So I knew the above ridiculous scene existed from the film's astonishingly inept trailer, and how could I resist? It has everything that our Ways Not To Die posts crave - death, googly eyes, giant praying mantises. Everything!

Seriously though - why a praying mantis? How did this happen? I know Vlad's supposed to have the ability to transform into many a beast (and mist, and on, and on) but how does one sit down and decide an enormous green insect is the way to go? How does one sit down, write that, and then get money for that? It boggles my mind.

After watching this scene I skipped around the movie a bunch and I have to say, watching it that way - without sound, only stopping for the violent and or naked bits - it actually doesn't seem that bad.

Ya know? I guess that's the way to watch it - in five minutes with your finger firmly pressed to the fast forward button. I was hoping for some gay stuff involving Kretschmann - as we were promised - but it looks like that ultimately only involves some eye-flappy flirting and then the heavy necking.

In all seriousness though, man the movie looks awful. I hope the Dracula TV series - with Jonathan Rhys-Meyers playing Drac and Thomas Kretschmann heading back Transylvania way to play Van Helsing (see the trailer here) turns out better for Tommy. I don't want him going anywhere. (Like back to Germany for good.) Never leave me, Kretsch!
