What A Difference 30 Years Can Make

.
Speaking of Sterling Hayden, I was just randomly looking him up - I am thinking about diving in and watching a bunch of his movies sometime soon, any suggestions? I've never seen The Asphalt Jungle so that's tip top of my list - and I was struck by how nearly unrecognizable he was from the start of his career to his later years. On the left that's him at 25 years old in his second movie, called Bahama Passage, and on the right that's him at 56 in The Godfather. I'm not knocking how he looks at the older age, he's still a handsome older man with a great character's face. But I don't think I'd have guessed he was all this in his youth, you know? In summation, aging can cram it.

whenever I hear Sterling Hayden's name I think of Altman's version of 'The Long Goodbye". I'm betting you've seen that, though.
(and I won't insult you by even mentioning 'Dr. Strangelove'!)

Actually I have never seen The Long Goodbye either! Onto my list.

I've never been a big fan of Hayden's although he was a looker in his youth, to me he often comes off as wooden but he did make some decent movies particularly during noir's heyday.

I'd suggest Johnny Guitar, a truly strange Joan Crawford western directed by Nicolas Ray
The Killing-one of Stanley Kubrick's first films
Zero Hour!-the inspiration for Airplane! actually a decent little picture if, and its a big if, you can separate it from the spoof with Hayden in the role Lloyd Bridges would play
Five Steps to Danger-a good chase drama with Ruth Roman and he has a very amusing cameo in 9 to 5.

For sexy Sterling Hayden, try "The Star"
