Clint Is The Road To Mansell

.
That rather shoddy picture there to the left is the director Darren Aronofsky introducing his constant musical collaborator the composer Clint Mansell last night at St Paul the Apostle's church here in New York City for a live performance of Mansell's works. Darren talks with his hands too much, I couldn't get a good shot! Anyway the show itself was anything but shoddy - can I use the word "transcendent" and not sound like a cheese-ball? No? Okay whatever I'm a cheese-ball. It was, though. Mansell tinkered with his laptop and keyboard while several other musicians took the reins on the piano and the strings and the guitars, so on, and they made movies happen around us with sound. They played pieces from Moon, Stoker, Last Night, Requiem For a Dream, and The Fountain - I was surprised there was no Black Swan, but you can't beat going out on the high that is "Death is the Road To Awe" from The Fountain, now can you?

Speaking of, a treat! I managed to record a little bit of the show. The quality's not perfect or anything, but it's better than I expected it to be, and it gives you an idea. I recorded three pieces - the entirety of what he played from Requiem For a Dream is first; second is the track "Becomes the Color" from the Stoker soundtrack which features Emily Wells on vocals (my phone didn't pick up the vocals as well as it did the rest of the music); and finally the show-closing epic piece de resistance, "Death is the Road To Awe" from The Fountain. Enjoy!

Possibly my favorite composer working in modern film!
